Joomla 3.0 Design Overview

With Joomla 3.0 the largest change that took place was the complete overhaul of the Joomla administrator design. The UX (user experience) was redesigned from the ground up trying to make for a more productive feel when using Joomla.

We have gone through the latest release and made some notes about what's changed Joomla 3.0. Lets get started!

Login Screen

With 3.0 you get a much smaller login screen that has a cleaner look and feel. It's not as wide or stale.

The Joomla 2.5 was larger, had some extraneous text and a picture of a lock that made it more crowded feeling

Administration Screen: Quick Links

In Joomla 3.0 there is a concise list of easy to read links wish small icons. This gives you enough of a visual to easily find what you're looking for without taking up much space at all.

Joomla 2.5 was not the worst. though it took up A LOT of space. Most of the time I use the top links anyway, so the quick links just took up space. Glad to see they have been improved!

Administration Screen: Main Menu

The main menu in 3.0 is much slicker. No icons, just light weight text and boxes that appears instantly when the mouse hovers over the text.

The 2.5 version of the main menu was pretty close to the same layout, but the new 3.0 look improves the speed at which you can browse in the backend of Joomla.

Manager: Article Manager

3.0 follow a new philosophy of having the main buttons on the top and more specific selection on the left column. As you view to the right (not pictured) you see article attributes like Access, Author, Language, Date, and ID for the articles.

*Note the extension manager, menu manager and most other managers in Joomla 3.0 have the same layout philosophy.

in Joomla 2.5 (and previous versions) all of the main buttons are on the top right. The selection drop downs are hidden grossly above the articles (In my opinion ;P)

Article Editors

Joomla 3.0 now has all of the article options on a tabbed menu over the article. Click each tab for to switch views to see that set of options (not pictured).

One more cool feature is the main article menu options will stick to the top of your browser window as you scroll down. Much easier to click save and exit.

In Joomla 2.5 (and previous versions) there is a lot configuration settings that pushes the article text way down the page. The drop down options stayin the right side (not pictured) adds a lot to sort through while you are trying to find a specific feature. And at the bottom you have a large set of permission options.

Overview Conclusion

the new design is more inviting and offers more to new Joomla users for easy navigation. Some of these design elements could change over the next few months as the releases become more stable and more users have had time to report issues.

Hope this article has been a sufficient coverage of what Joomla 3.0 will offer. If you want to see how the new install process looks check out this article:
